BILLBOARD DANCE / ELECTRONIC YEAR-END HOT 100 - REVIEW [PART 2] (feat. Casper)

PART 1:

LUX: Whew cliffhangers, anyways welcome back to my place!

Casper: Dthey know about the imanbekators? Do they know about lithuanian bass? Do they know what happened in D-

LUX: Oh, right. You're here.

Casper: Wha-? Ah, we're doing this.
This is the part 2 of our review, not a ranking, of the 2020 Billboard EDM YE Hot 100.

LUX: Yeah it didn't take me long to realize that putting together a ranking would not work. So instead we're going from #100 to #1 on Billboard's Dance/Electronic YE list. We already covered the first 50 songs on Casper's blog, so now, let's wrap this up.

This is Casper x LUX 99's Billboard Dance/EDM Year-End Hot 100 Review: Part 2 (Songs from #50 to #1 on the Year-End list).

50. SOFI TUKKER - Purple Hat
LUX: 3/5         Casper: 3/5

LUX: I'm giving this a 3/5 but the truth is that this song is either the best or the worst thing mankind has ever created, absolutely nowhere in between.

Casper: It does take some time getting used to, but I think I'm mostly positive about it.

49. JVLA - Such A Whore (Stellular Remix)
LUX: 0/5         Casper: 0/5

Both: This is fucking garbage.

48. Clean Bandit & Mabel ft. 24kGoldn - Tick Tock
LUX: 5/5         Casper: 5/5

LUX: This is like,, the most obvious Pop/EDM collab ever, it was specifically designed to be a banger. It worked.

Casper: Clean Bandit PLEASE miss just ONCE i BEG you

47. Alan Walker & Ava Max - Alone, Pt. II
LUX: 1/5         Casper: 0/5

LUX: Alan Walker has never been all that good as a producer but at least he tends to know how to make his music not feel overpowered and shaky, whereas most elements on this song sound like ass, including Ava.

Casper: I usually like Ava Max, Alan Walker has made some good songs too, but this is genuinely abysmal.

46. Louis The Child, Quinn XCII & Chelsea Cutler - Little Things
LUX: 2/5         Casper: 2/5

Casper: For the longest time I thought I was listening to the original version, while it was actually the Will Sparks remix. The original sounds so bland and slow compared to it.

LUX: "Just like this synth it's the little things" no, your cock is the little thing, smartass.

45. Oliver Heldens & Riton - Turn Me On
LUX: 4/5         Casper: 5/5

LUX: I've heard like 10 different songs use the sample from Don't Go by Yazoo and all of them do it the exact same way. It's a good sample tho so I can excuse it.

Casper: It's not Gecko but I still love it.

44. Kygo & Kim Petras - Broken Glass
LUX: 4/5
         Casper: 3/5

LUX: One of the songs from Golden Hour that I don't love nearly as much anymore, but it's still good.

Casper: Another great buildup, another bad drop.

43. Vicetone & Tony Igy - Astronomia
LUX: 5/5         Casper: 5/5

LUX: Forget about Toosie Slide or stuck with u, this is the song of the pandemic. I think what I love the most about it is how contained in itself it feels, it's an Electro House song but the production is so lowkey and bouncy that it gives a vibe of a simple House jam that I could find myself listening to quite often.

Casper: The Coffin Dance meme was a defining 2020 moment and im glad it had such a good song to go along with it.

42. Gryffin ft. Maia Wright - Body Back
LUX: 3/5         Casper: 4/5

Casper: more Gryffin and... huh I actually really like this one. It's cute and bouncy.

LUX: Man doing this has made me realize how uninteresting Gryffin can be. I kinda like the bounce on this one too tho.

41. REZZ x Grabbitz - Someone Else
LUX: 5/5         Casper: 5/5

LUX: I don't think I've ever mentioned this but I've been a REZZ stan since 2017, she's the 2nd queen of the universe right behind Eileen from Regular Show. This is not her best song but honestly the mere fact that she now has a hit to her name is enough for me to simp.

Casper: It's an amazing song, but the kind of amazing that doesn't really strike as hard outside of the first listen.

40. Dua Lipa ft. DaBaby - Levitating
LUX: 5/5         Casper: 5/5

LUX: Oh look, the 3rd queen of the universe. I've talked about this song and its remixes a lot by now so I'll just repeat myself, the original is a pretty good song with a killer groove that unfortunately lacked something new to stand out from all the other pretty good songs with a killer groove on the Future Nostalgia album. Turns out what it needed is DaBaby doing one of the most DaBaby verses of his career, adding the right amount of variation and charisma to push this over the top and turning it into, in my opinion, Dua's best single this year.

Casper: You can run, you can hide, but you can never escape DaBaby.

39. Martin Garrix & Dean Lewis - Used To Love
LUX: 3/5         Casper: 3/5

LUX: Be Alright would be a pretty decent song if Dean Lewis didn't sound awful throughout most of it. Fortunately most of the problems with his vocals are fixed on this other song which would also be pretty good if the instrumental wasn't so watered down coming from Martin Garrix.

Casper: (tries to say exactly the same thing as Lux but in other words)

38. Flume ft. Toro y Moi - The Difference
LUX: 4/5         Casper: 4/5

LUX: I like this one a lot more than Rushing Back but it doesn't fully live up to its potential either, at least it does have a really smooth vibe and it does sound like it was made by Flume.

Casper: Ooooooo

OoOOoOoOoo

37. Kygo & Tina Turner - What's Love Got To Do With It
LUX: 4/5         Casper: 4/5

LUX: We're back again with Kygo doing remixes for old classics, once again this isn't quite as good as Tina Turner's original but it has a pretty great vibe, a very clean production and like,, an amazing key change. Very solid overall.

Casper: It's a good song, but like, it's a strictly inferior version of Higher Love.

36. Lady Gaga - Alice
LUX: 4/5         Casper: 3/5

LUX: This is a song by Lady Gaga.

Casper: Sure

35. Master KG ft. Burna Boy & Nomcebo Zikode - Jerusalema
LUX: 3/5         Casper: 2/5

LUX: No idea why this is here but it has a very cozy and atmospheric melody so it's alright I guess.

Casper: It's a very interesting song and I'm glad it's here, but it's definitely something not for me.

34. Sam Smith - I Feel Love
LUX: 4/5         Casper: 4/5

LUX: Oh look, another Donna Summer revision. Honestly I might like this more than the original version and I'm saying this only semi-ironically.

Casper: I'm so glad Sam Smith stopped making boring ballads.

33. Kygo ft. Zak Abel - Freedom
LUX: 5/5         Casper: 4/5

LUX: This is one of the better produced songs on Golden Hour, almost every element of it is very polished and pleasant to hear, including the vocalist.

Casper: Everything sounds nice, just a Nice song to listen to.

32. Lady Gaga - Free Woman
LUX: 3/5         Casper: 3/5

LUX: This is a song by Lady Gaga.

Casper: i have no thoughts about this lady gaga song

31. GRiZ & Subtronics - Griztronics
LUX: 4/5         Casper: 4/5

LUX: Hybrid Trap is a subgenre that's still pretty relevant in the EDM scene, just as much as (if not more than) Dubstep itself, this being by far the biggest representation of it this year, and it slaps pretty hard. It's a whole acid trip in which every segment of it slaps you in the face, if the payoffs were as strong as the buildups every time it would be an easy 5/5.

Casper: bumps in the whip, i like how varied this is.

LUX: I gotta point out that this charted because of a TikTok trend. I did research and it turns out that the used audio clips for said trend cut right after the "Ooh this shit be hittin different" line before one of the many drops, this is a shame because it doesn't showcase how versatile the song is through and through, so I recommend you listen to it in full.

30. ILLENIUM - Nightlight
LUX: 5/5         Casper: 1/5

Casper: I hate to do this but to me this drop is just different sounds fighting over which one gets to be the most annoying.

LUX: Yeah I'll admit it... the production on this song is not amazing, the drop is overpowered and if you're not in the mood it can be way too much, it's true. But I'm sorry I just can't help but love every aspect of this song, it's like,, one of my biggest comfort songs from 2020. Listening to it feels like being alone in a dark forest at night and then bursting into flames, I can't even describe the feeling it gives me. For obvious reasons I don't listen to it at every moment but like,, wow.

29. Jason Derulo x Puri x Jhorrmountain - Coño
LUX: 0/5         Casper: 0/5

LUX: I've been familiar with this song for like 3 years now. I heard the original version back in late 2017 and thought it was one of the worst things I'd heard at the time, with an awful instrumental and terrible performers. I certainly wasn't happy when it got a TikTok revival thanks to a Jason Derulo remix 3 years after the fact.

Casper: I love Jason Derulo, but his return this year disappointed me a lot. While not all of his pop songs this year were bad (please make Take You Dancing a hit please please), he released 2 EDM songs this year and both are very bad. There's Don't Cry For Me with Alok, which sounds like a very bad posthumous Avicii cut and this, which just terrifies me.

28. Galantis & Dolly Parton ft. Mr. Probz - Faith
LUX: 3/5         Casper: 3/5

LUX: The existence of this song is fucking hysterical.

Casper: Dolly Parton killed it lmao

27. Lady Gaga - 911
LUX: 4/5         Casper: 2/5

LUX: This is a song by Lady Gaga.

Casper: R3hab's 911 outsold.

26. The Chainsmokers & Kygo - Family
LUX: 5/5         Casper: 2/5

LUX: Remember when The Chainsmokers put out a 3rd project? This is the best song from it imo. I've been listening to it for over a year now and I'm still not sick of it for some reason.

Casper: It's like other Kygo songs except worse

LUX: Fair.

25. Alesso ft. Liam Payne - Midnight
LUX: 3/5         Casper: 0/5

LUX: This is better than anything else Liam Payne will ever do and that's kinda comical.

Casper: This drop plays in my nightmares

24. Kygo, Zara Larsson & Tyga - Like It Is
LUX: 3/5          Casper: 4/5

Casper: Out of all Kygo songs on this list, this is the one I've heard on the radio the most and I'm fine with that.

LUX: Y'know this one's fine but in between the Avicii thing and now giving Tyga even more of a platform... it's hard for me to support anyone in 2020 without getting trust issues.

23. Major Lazer ft. Marcus Mumford - Lay Your Head On Me
LUX: 3/5         Casper: 2/5

LUX: Pretty nice stuff.

Casper: It's just kinda boring.

22. Kygo & Sasha Sloan - I'll Wait
LUX: 5/5         Casper: 4/5

LUX: My favorite Kygo song of the year. If you don't feel like listening to the whole Golden Hour album I recommend you at least listen to this one to get the whole idea, it's beautiful.

Casper: I didn't like it the first time I heard it but it's nice actually

21. Lil XXEL - LMK
LUX: 4/5         Casper: 5/5

Casper: Deserved to be a summer hit.

LUX: No idea where this came from or how it ended up here but I think I love it.

20. Zedd & Jasmine Thompson - Funny
LUX: 4/5         Casper: 1/5

LUX: I loved this one for like a month, now it's just kind of pretty good.

Casper: I... I think I hate Zedd???

19. DJ Regard & RAYE - Secrets
LUX: 5/5         Casper: 5/5

LUX: I've come to the conclusion that this is better than Ride It. I love that one but it doesn't change much throughout, this one on the other hand feels like it moves faster and has more of an instrumental variation within sections. My favorite part is the little pre-chorus it has, when the bassline gets a bit deeper and it fits the low pitched vocals perfectly. The drop is just Ride It again but it's still a good drop so it's fine.

Casper: I don't think Regard's style will ever get old.

18. The Chainsmokers - Takeaway
LUX: 4/5         Casper: 4/5

LUX: The lyrics are stupid and it barely sounds like an ILLENIUM song but every other aspect is well done so I'm giving it my approval.

Casper: Yes. This barely sounds like an Illenium song. I wonder what correlation this has with the rating I gave it.

LUX: Good point.

17. Major Lazer & J Balvin ft. El Alfa - Que Calor
LUX: 2/5         Casper: 4/5

LUX: Kind of annoying but most of the times it doesn't give me any reaction.

Casper: Bangs in the absolute dumbest way.

16. Lady Gaga & BLACKPINK - Sour Candy
LUX: 3/5         Casper: 3/5

Casper: It was great for like 3 days and that's it

LUX: This is a song by L-

15. MEDUZA x Becky Hill x GOODBOYS - Lose Control
LUX: 4/5         Casper: 5/5

LUX: MEDUZA are lazy. What they do is way beyond just ripping off themselves, they literally just do carbon copies of their own songs, exact same formula, element by element. They already did this 3 times and so far it's giving them a 3rd hit called Paradise, which, of course, is exactly the same song as both of their 2 previous hits, Piece Of Your Heart and Lose Control.

I'm not gonna complain since the 3 songs are all very good!

Yeah, the laziness is there, but if you're gonna be lazy don't do it like other producers and actually make the songs good with charisma and an actual groove y'know.

Casper: Out of the 3 Meduza hits, this is easily my favorite. They're all pretty much the same song, but what makes this song go beyond is Becky Hill. She has an incredible voice, and I love the feeling of genuine danger and darkness on "when **I** lose control"

LUX: Oh yeah that too stan Becky Hill.

14. Marshmello & Demi Lovato - OK Not To Be OK
LUX: 3/5         Casper: 3/5

LUX: Be Kind this is not but it's pleasant enough.

Casper: More like

OK

13. Joel Corry ft. MNEK - Head & Heart
LUX: 5/5         Casper: 4/5

Casper: I still like it, but it honestly gets worse with every listen.

LUX: Bam bam badum bam bam bam bam badum.

12. ILLENIUM & Jon Bellion - Good Things Fall Apart
LUX: 5/5         Casper: 1/5

Casper: This one was so close to charting on the hot 100

I'm so glad it never happened.

LUX: ...uhm yeah so hi officer I wanna make a report for cyberbullying

11. Sam Feldt ft. RANI - Post Malone
LUX: 2/5         Casper: 2/5

LUX: This one is probably shit, not sure tbh I don't care enough to find out.

Casper: I don't even associate this song with 2020 what is this doing so high on this list

10. Kygo & OneRepublic - Lose Somebody
LUX: 4/5         Casper: 0/5

LUX: Eh, I know Casper really hates this one. When I first heard Golden Hour I thought this one was pretty good, then I listened to it more and more on its own and I started to love it. Now that I'm relistening to it alongside all the other cuts from the album I can recognize that it's not as great in comparison, but I still like it.

Casper: I hate this song so much it makes me feel like I'm dying in agony and no one is able to hear my cries for help. Would be my least favorite on the list but Such A Whore is a thing that exists apparently.

9. Kygo & Whitney Houston - Higher Love
LUX: 5/5         Casper: 5/5

LUX: Now unlike the other 2 Kygo remixes on this list, this one is for a Whitney Houston cover cut that never got released... and I'd say it could pass as an actual Kygo x Whitney collab, and a great one at that.

Casper: At least the last Kygo song on the list is also the best one.

LUX: Glad we end up on a similar page.

8. Topic & A7S - Breaking Me
LUX: 4/5         Casper: 5/5

Casper: Kinda crazy how good this song is, but I guess that's what happens when you rip off Ocean Drive but make it Lit... sorry, Brazilian Bass.

LUX: Lithuanian Bass.

Casper: but we're on your blog...

LUX: I've embraced it.

7. DJ Regard - Ride It
LUX: 5/5         Casper: 5/5

LUX: Everyone welcome our new overlord, Jay Sean.

Casper: It's been more than a year since the vocals on the official YouTube upload and all streaming services have been changed. The new version is much worse. Possibly millions of people around the world have only heard the inferior version and don't even know it. And that depresses me.

6. Lady Gaga - Stupid Love
LUX: 2/5         Casper: 4/5

Casper: Should have been a hit over Rain On Me

LUX: This is a s-

5. Marshmello & Bastille - Happier
LUX: 4/5         Casper: 4/5

LUX: I still like this as a cute little pop song but there's no way it was a bigger EDM hit this year than Ride It or Breaking Me.

Casper: Spent 69 weeks at #1, never forget.

4. Surf Mesa ft. emilee - ily
LUX: 4/5         Casper: 5/5

Both: Who caresjust vibe.

3. Lady Gaga & Ariana Grande - Rain On Me
LUX: 4/5         Casper: 2/5

Casper: Is this really it? Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande collaboration and it sounds like this? Lame

LUX: Th-

2. Black Eyed Peas, Jaden Smith & J Balvin - RITMO
LUX: 0/5         Casper: 2/5

LUX: I'm not letting Casper give this one a 5/5 so I'm forcing him to listen to and review the Jaden Smith remix instead. What are your thoughts Boof?

Casper: Are you fu- ok, I can do this.

It's a huuuuge downgrade compared to the original, but since the core of the song is still mostly intact it gets a fat 2/5.

LUX: Hah, welp, you don't have to worry too much about it because we finally reached the end. Although we can't leave before taking one last look at oomf.

1. SAINt JHN - Roses (Imanbek Remix)
LUX: 5/5         Casper: 5/5

Casper: At this point, what haven't I said about this song? It's like the second coming of Jesus Christ for me.

LUX: I wanna have sex with this song.

CASPER's SCORE: 314 / 500

LUX's SCORE: 332 / 500

LUX: Well we made it to the end and holy fuck that's a high score. Gotta be honest, despite all the great music it had and what that high ass scoring would lead you to believe, I'm not sure this was a very strong year for EDM as a whole beyond my biases, but it saw a big revival into the mainstream with a lot of variety and it gives me hope for what the upcoming years could bring to the table, what do you think?

Casper: Well, I spent most of 2020 hyperfixated on Lithuanian Bass, and as I said many times before this was an incredible year for the genre, so of course I'm going to say that I loved EDM in 2020, even if my score here is lower than yours.

LUX: Irony am I right. Honestly even though I love doing rankings trying to rank these songs would've been hell, so it was nice to relax and switch it up a little. Had fun discussing these with ya Casper!

Casper: Yup, it's been a lot of fun. See ya!

*closes door*

LUX: Ah, on my own again. It was fun, hope I do more collabs in 2021, also remember to follow @oofy_Boof on twitter.

Welp, I've officially finished all my full projects for the 2020 YE lists on this blog, any other I rank will just be a quick runthrough on my twitter (@luxtalks). Not sure if now I'll finally start working on the next update for the 1000 Biggest Songs Of All Time ranking or if I'll just keep procrastinating on Among Us for a little more time but either way hope you guys stick around.

Good night tri state area.
